Naam Shabana is an off shoot from Neeraj Pandey’s Baby universe, and it stars Taapsee Pannu, Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher, Danny Denzongpa and Manoj Bajpayee. The film has been directed by Shivam Nair. Shubhra Gupta writes that the film works only because of Taapsee and Akshay Kumar, however the storyline is faulty.
Taapsee Pannu is looking quiet and submissive, dressed in salwar kameez, and suddenly transforms herself to take on a bunch of baddies with her badass martial arts moves. What about this film’s story? That’s separate. It starts towards the end, while other characters from ‘Baby’ (Akshay Kumar, Zakir Hussain, Anupam Kher in cameos) get in as late as Shabana did in the original, to take on a Bond-like international villain.
Neeraj Pandey as the producer, screenplay and dialogue writer of the film conjures up a familiar universe. It’s us, the good guys vs them, the “desh ke dushman”. Akshay Kumar with his thin moustache and Anupam Kher with the hideous wig are all in attendance.
